2022 STARCHEFS SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND RISING STARS AWARDS


DECEMBER 1 to DECEMBER 15

It’s only been three years since we were last in the Bay Area, but it feels like an eternity. The region, and its dining scene, are fundamentally different in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The market-driven mindset remains dominant, but on top of that, we saw a new definition of California cuisine: one where bold flavors and personal voice were equally emphasized. We visited with over 100 chefs, bartenders, sommeliers, bakers, pastry chefs, brewers, and artisans and were wowed on both sides of the Bay Bridge. From the foggy streets of San Francisco to the sunny hills of Oakland, we were met with both inventiveness and the high level of execution that the region is known for. 

Between San Francisco and Oakland, our 19 Rising Stars run the gamut of the hospitality scene. Across the board, we were excited by the harmonious relationship between creativity and the legacy of California produce. But it was the emphasis that young professionals put on more personal inflection, more equity, and a better work-life balance for themselves and their teams, all while celebrating the rich and diverse history of the Bay Area that most inspired us. The question isn’t if these new faces will push this internationally recognized dining scene to new heights; the question is how far they can go.
